A Little Night Music

A Little Night Music by Stephen Sondheim is set in the enchanted birch groves of Sweden at the turn of the 20th century, a period of elegant living, in which the twilight lingers and the summer nights smile.  The * five lieder singers, who appear at the beginning of the show and who make tongue in cheek comments throughout the entire evening, are a very integral part of the show.  They are in a way the narrators – the story tellers – who bring together the events or memories of the past to the happenings or thoughts of the present action.

A middle aged lawyer marries a beautiful 18 year old and after 11 months of marriage his delicate and wondering wife is still a virgin.  On impulse he visits an actress friend and is discovered by her Hussar lover. The young wife joins with the Hussar’s wife in some gentle plotting against the lawyer.  The actress’s mother, who takes care of her grand-daughter, is persuaded to invite the lawyer, his wife and his son, who is madly in love with his stepmother, to a country weekend at her villa.   The Hussar and his wife intrude and also become guests for the weekend. After an elegantly sparred verbal battle during the dinner party at the country villa, the tangled affairs finally unravel to the satisfaction of almost all concerned.
